How modern names are written
The examples below are modern names written in Elder Futhark by sound, using the same mapping as the field on this page. This is transliteration. The runes record pronunciation, not a translation of the name, and they are not offered as the one historical spelling.
- Emma
- ᛖᛗᚨ
- Erik
- ᛖᚱᛁᚲ
- Ingrid
- ᛁᛜᚱᛁᛞ

How this name tool works
Runes follow sound, not spelling. The tool writes each sound in a name with one of the 24 Elder Futhark runes: a hard C becomes ᚲ, a soft C becomes ᛊ, and TH becomes ᚦ. A double letter is carved once, the way the old rune carvers did it, so Anna is ᚨᚾᚨ and Olsson is ᛟᛚᛊᛟᚾ.
Some people call this a rune name generator or a rune translator. It is not a translation: your name keeps its meaning and is simply written in an older alphabet. Every result follows the same rules we use for our name prints, and we check each print by hand before it is made.
